Moving Large or Awkward Items?

Friday, February 6th, 2015

Most household items are easy to pack and stack in nice neat boxes. Clothes, crockery, books, pillows – they all can be placed in bags or boxes with ease. But what about those awkward items such as coffee machines, fish tanks, mirrors, TV’s, exercise bikes or wine collections? Large or bulky items are a bother to wrap and relocate. Even if you want to do most of the move yourself it is best to get a professional removal team in for big, heavy or breakable items.

NT residents looking to move have a range of removalist companies to choose from. Arbon’s Removals & Storage are the specialists in awkward and heavy removal jobs and provide relocation for local, interstate and global moves.

Still want to go it alone?

If you decide you want to try move your own items to save on costs, make sure you are prepared for some heavy lifting, to buy materials and to hire a truck or trailer.

The weeks leading up to a move you can start collecting boxes, bubble wrap and readying blankets and towels to protect your items or you can buy boxes and packing materials from Arbon’s Removals And Storage or another removal company in the Northern Territory.

Professional packing materials are guaranteed to protect your items during a move and are abundant. Turn away from the old newspaper and dodgy boxes and opt for professional cartons, bubble wrap, plastic coverings, tarp, boxes, pillows and labelling.

When wrapping yourself take extra care to wrap and cover any edges. Desks, sofas and whitegoods can get dinted and scuffed if exposed.

Lift with care.

Moving home can be a stressful and rushed procedure but safety should never be rushed. Professional movers have been taught to lift and carry heavy awkward items and follow OH & S standards. They also have machinery to help load and unload possessions into trucks. If you have decided to move heavy or awkward items yourself don’t rush the process.

Bend your knees to pick heavy items up without rounding or straining your back. The most common injury during a move is a back injury due to people trying to lift with their back. Injuring your back is never a risk you should take – no matter how much you might save.

Make sure you get help on a move from friends, family or a professional removalist whether you are moving the whole home or just a fridge.

Renovating an older home? Know the risks.

    beforeAsbestos

Asbestos is a fire-resistant and durable mineral fibre. In Brisbane and all over Australia asbestos was used to insulate homes. It is a fantastic barrier against heat, noise and as mentioned before is fire resistant. Not only was it placed in walls, flooring, decking and roofs but was also mixed with other substances. Asbestos can be found in cement and plaster making it a great risk for home renovators.p4150096

Asbestos Use

Up until the early 1980’s materials mixed with asbestos were utilised in building construction. Products containing asbestos were used right up until the late 1980’s. Products that may contain asbestos if your home is older than 40 years include gutters, roof felt and shingles, cement, board siding & under sheeting, soffit boards, main panels and fuse boxes, walls, stucco, blown-in insulation, deck under-sheeting, downpipes and sadly the list goes on. This may seem overwhelming but there are now as many asbestos removal companies in Brisbane as there are asbestos cases. When renovating or demolishing an older house there is a high chance of coming across asbestos-containing materials so get in a professional before you begin your project.

If products made of asbestos are in good condition and left undisturbed, they do not pose a significant danger of releasing asbestos fibres into the air. However, once these materials have been disturbed or start to deteriorate then they pose a threat. Often a problem arises when material containing asbestos is drilled, sanded, moved, broken or dropped. During a renovation one or all of these actions are probable.

To avoid this risk have an asbestos inspection and asbestos removal company come in before you start your DIY project.

The Hazards of Asbestos

Once asbestos is released into the air it becomes a hazard. Asbestos fibres are incredibly fine and can stay afloat in the air around a construction or demolition site for hours. Breathing in asbestos fibres causes a range of serious health problems the most common being lung disease and lung cancer. Asbestosis is the most common result of asbestos inhalation. It’s what the scarring and stiffening of the lungs caused by inhaling asbestos dust is called. Asbestosis causes breathing difficulties and can lead to fatal diseases like pneumonia and heart disease. Exposure to asbestos has also been documented to cause lung cancer and mesothelioma. The thing about these diseases is they take years to expose themselves and by this time it’s too late. Don’t take the risk of working with asbestos and hoping nothing happens, you will regret it in years to come.
